Valuable Safety Tips

Brought to you by The Gas Company.
Glad to be of service.

  • Secure water heaters to the wall studs to prevent them from moving or toppling over. The water heater should be fastened securely to the wall studs in two places -- the upper and lower one-third of the tank -- with heavy bolts and metal tape.
  • The Gas Company adds a distinct odor to an otherwise odorless natural gas to help keep you safe. For helpful safety tips including what to do if you smell natural gas, visit socalgas.com
  • Know where your gas meter is located. Have a 12-inch adjustable wrench handy to manually turn off the gas meter should it be necessary. A diagram and instructions for turning off the gas meter are printed in most telephone directory white pages.
  • Do not turn off the gas meter after an earthquake or other disaster UNLESS there is the smell or sound of gas escaping. Learn how to shut off your natural gas meter by visiting socalgas.com or from your local directory white pages.
  • Call Underground Service Alert toll-free at 1-800-227-2600 at least 2 business days before you dig in your yard. Underground Service Alert will identify where the gas line and other utility lines serving your property are located.
