Florida Might Get Lennon "Imagine" Tag

John Lennon's "Imagine" is inspiring a proposal for a Florida license plate.
Michael Towner, 44, a longtime Beatles fan, is leading a campaign to have Florida add an "Imagine" specialty tag to help raise money for food banks. The popular song includes the line, "No need for greed or hunger."
There are already 88 Florida specialty license tags, which sell at a premium, and a long list waiting for legislative approval.
Each motorist who buys an "Imagine" tag would contribute $25 to the Florida Association of Food Banks, Towner said Friday. The plate's design is light blue with glowing dark blue letters spelling out "Imagine." In the center is a self-portrait sketched by Lennon, who wrote the song in 1971.
It could be long before the tags find their way onto cars. Towner needs to pay a $60,000 application fee and get 15,000 Floridians to sign a petition backing the tag by Dec. 1. So far, he has about 2,000 signatures and nothing in the bank, he said.
If he succeeds, the Legislature then has to approve the tag.
Lennon was assassinated in 1980 and his widow, Yoko Ono, controls his estate. Ono agreed to the tag proposal because it is a "good cause," said her lawyer, Peter Shukat. BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP)
