Santana's Milagro Foundation Awards Grants Deborah and Carlos Santana launchedthe non-profit Milagro Foundation in 1998, with a mission to serve at-risk, under-represented, and disadvantaged children and youth in the areas of arts, education, and health. The name Milagro, which means miracle, was inspired by the image of children as divine miracles of light and hope. "Milagro," Deborah has said, "is the essence of working in harmony with the world, of building up life, and sharing what you have." Establishing the foundation was a way for Deborah and Carlos to address the hundreds of requests for charitable assistance they -- and the Santana Band -- received on an annual basis. In its first half-decade of operation, Milagro has donated $1,346,833.51 to 191 agencies in 24 of the United States, and in 19 countries around the globe. The Milagro Foundation's Board of Directors -- for which Deborah Santana is Vice President -- evaluates proposals from all over the world, sent largely by grass roots and community-based organizations, which are Milagro's philanthropic focus. This week, Executive Director Shelley Brown announced brand new grants totaling $77,000, the final slate for 2003. The latest recipients include 11 San Francisco Bay area programs -- Milagro is based at the Santana Band's Bay Area headquarters -- and 8 more across the United States and internationally. These bequests bring total monies distributed this calendar year to $259,400, spread among 65 organizations around the world. Most grants are between $2,500 and $5,000, and are bestowed three times annually, in February, June and October. The Milagro Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) public charity, is supported by the Santana Family and its musical organization through funds generated by concert ticket donations, revenues from Santana licensees, and generous individual and corporate donors.
