Carlos Santana Honored By Hometown

Carlos Santana will be honored today (February 27) in his hometown of Autlan, Mexico, in the western foothills of the Sierra Madres. Santana, whose latest album Supernatural was certified 14 times platinum and earned the 53-year-old guitarist a record nine Grammy awards last year, will be recognized by the city of his birth with a full day of honors and events, including the dedication of a street in his name and the unveiling of a commemorative statue. The day will begin with a private ceremony at City Hall, where Santana will be presented the keys to the city, or "Llaves de la Ciudad," and the event will be broadcast by local television, followed by a national and international press conference. The first public event of the day will be the official naming of Avenue Carlos Santana, when a plaque bearing the guitarist's name is uncovered. Santana will then take a break from the festivities to visit with more than 100 of Autlan's underprivileged children at a local historic church, a cause near to his heart. Following that, Santana returns to the center of town for the gala inauguration of a public square in his name, where a life sized statue of the musician will be unveiled. In addition, a bust of Santana's father Jose Santana will be presented. Santana was born in the city of Autlan de Navarro, and it was there that his father Jose, an accomplished mariachi violinist, first introduced his son Carlos to traditional Mexican music. Of the honors being bestowed upon him in his hometown, Santana said: "What the city of Autlan has done in honoring me and my father touches me profoundly. Being remembered in such an extraordinary way is a great tribute, one that is made that much more special coming from a place so dear to my heart. I wish to express my deepest joy and gratitude." -- Sue Falco, New York (
