Bob Seger's Boat Wins At Race A boat skippered by rock star Bob Seger won its division in the 78th annual Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race on Monday.Seger's boat, Lightning of St. Clair Shores, finished at 6:47 a.m. That gave it an adjusted time of 39 hours, 44 minutes, 27 seconds, first by 1:44:44 among the 15 boats in PHRF A/GL 50 class. Evolution, a Santa Cruz 70 from Sheboygan, Wis., was the first boat across the line at 1:33 a.m. It won the GL 70 competition, completing the 291-mile Southampton Course in an adjusted time of 35:21:07. That was 27:28 ahead of the next boat in the class, Colt 45, according to the sponsoring Bayview Yacht Club's Web site. Colt 45, a 68-footer owned by Allan Fletcher of Alpena, reached the island at 2:09 a.m. and had a corrected time of 35:48:35. The last of the 10 boats in GL 70 finished at 5:58 a.m. On the 233-mile Shore Course, Contender of Grosse Pointe Park was first across the line at 8:30 a.m. It won the CC 35 class in a corrected 37:01:54. Dog Dayz of New Baltimore crossed at 8:31 a.m. and first place in the Cruising A class in a corrected 37:54:35. One boat in the class had not finished by about 5 p.m. The boat Promotion officially dropped out of the race at 7:18 a.m. after running aground near Round Island. The U.S. Coast Guard was called in to assist. In all, 244 sailboats with an estimated 3,000 crew members left Port Huron on Saturday. |
